The reunion: what was announced on 9 October 2026
The news came in a short video featuring the full classic line-up: Bernard Fanning (vocals), Ian Haug (guitar), Darren Middleton (guitar), John “JC” Collins (bass) and Jon Coghill (drums). Bernard Fanning: “We are going to do some shows all around Australia from September next year.” It ended weeks of speculation fuelled by coded billboards in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane — grids referencing the band’s seven albums, five members, 18 ARIA Awards and the date 13.11.2010, the night of their last show. Ian Haug also promised that no AI would be used in the reunion shows.
Formed in Brisbane in 1989, Powderfinger released seven studio albums, the last being Golden Rule (2009), and landed five consecutive ARIA number-one albums from Internationalist (1998). 2026 also marks 30 years since their debut Double Allergic (1996).
The last tour: Sunsets, 2010
Powderfinger split in 2010 after the Sunsets farewell tour, which opened on 1 September 2010 at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre and closed on 13 November 2010 at the Riverstage in Brisbane — the last of five Brisbane nights. It sold about 250,000 tickets (22 of 34 dates sold out, according to Pollstar at the time), with Jet, The Vines and You Am I supporting on different dates; in Sydney the band played Acer Arena (a third show added after two sell-outs). The only performance since was One Night Lonely in 2020, a virtual concert during the pandemic that raised around A$500,000 for Support Act and Beyond Blue.
